Service and Meter Installation Requirements Guide

05.05   METER INSTALLATIONS - GENERAL

METERS - OUTDOOR

All meters for single-phase or three-phase rated up to and including 800 amps shall normally be installed outdoors. These capacities refer to individual meter socket capacities only. The service entrance capacity may be larger to accommodate group installations, provided that none of the individual meters exceeds the 200 amp capacity. For higher capacity meters or unusual installation problems, the appropriate Customer Operations Center must be consulted.

GENERAL

The meter will be of proper size and type to serve the present connected load. When connected load is to be changed, GPU Energy shall be notified so that the meter and/or service transformer can be changed, if required.

When aluminum conductors are used in overhead service entrance cable, the Electrician, when making the connections of aluminum conductors to meter socket terminals, shall apply a corrosion inhibiting compound recommended by, and installed in the manner prescribed by the cable manufacturer.

GPU Energy reserves the right to install security devices on meter sockets and related equipment and/or any enclosure containing unmetered (i.e. line side) conductors.

INTERFERENCE WITH GPU'S METERING EQUIPMENT AND ITS CONNECTIONS, GPU ENERGY'S SEALS AND LOCKS, OR WITH ANY SERVICE CONNECTION WITHOUT APPROVAL FROM GPU ENERGY IS PROHIBITED. WHERE APPROPRIATE, SUCH INTERFERENCE WILL BE PROSECUTED TO THE FULLEST EXTENT UNDER APPLICABLE NEW JERSEY OR PENNSYLVANIA LAWS OR REGULATIONS.

METERS - GENERAL

All watt-hour meters, demand meters and instrument transformers required to measure the electrical service for each customer are provided by GPU Energy. With the exception of circumstances listed in requirements 1.30 and 7.10 ONLY COMPANY PERSONNEL ARE AUTHORIZED TO INSTALL, REMOVE OR RELOCATE METERS OR INSTRUMENT TRANSFORMERS. The installation of these devices is made by the Company except in those cases where unusual conditions are encountered, in which case GPU Energy shall be consulted for suitable arrangements.

In general, all services will be supplied and metered at the secondary distribution voltage unless service transformers are customer-owned. Service supplied at 2400 volts or higher shall be metered with metering transformers located outdoors when conditions permit. The meter location shall be determined by GPU Energy. GPU Energy reserves the right to meter service through customer-owned transformers at the secondary voltage, to obtain the primary equivalent, when such a method is practical as permitted in the applicable GPU Energy Tariff.

Metered and unmetered conductors will not be permitted in the same conduit or raceway, except in special cases where Company approval has been obtained.
