Service and Meter Installation Requirements Guide

05.55   SHORT CIRCUIT CURRENT

The National Electrical Code requires that the service equipment be rated with available short-circuit current. Article 110-9 states: "Equipment intended to interrupt current at fault levels shall have an interrupting rating sufficient for the nominal circuit voltage and the current that is available at the line terminals of the equipment".

In accordance with Article 110-9, GPU Energy will require the following:

All new single phase, network and 3-phase service entrance equipment shall be suitable for the short circuit current available. GPU Energy recommends service entrance load center equipped with main fuses that have current limiting characteristics (UL Classes K-1, J, T, or G) for full coordination with branch breakers. If the Customer chooses a load center equipped with other than the aforementioned fuses, GPU Energy must be consulted for the available fault current at each service location to verify the equipment's suitability.
