Service and Meter Installation Requirements Guide

06.05   METER SOCKETS -GENERAL

The Customer will supply an approved meter socket or meter mounting device for each metering position. A listing of self-contained meter sockets which are approved for use in the Company's service territory can be found in the Section 13 at the end of this manual. Meter sockets shall be outdoor type, and may be installed indoors only when the Company has determined that an outdoor location is not suitable. An approved watertight fitting, secured with duct seal, must be used on all outdoor meter locations whenever an overhead service entrance cable is installed. Single position meter sockets shall never be used as junction boxes to extend circuits to other sockets or load devices, except as required to maintain service to an existing off-peak water heater meter.

Multi-assembled socket panels will be permitted. However, prior approval must be obtained from the Company for each such installation.

Each socket or meter mounting device must be mounted plumb as viewed from the front and sides, and must be secured to its support at each mounting hole provided. Wood screws are to be used on frame walls, and expansion type anchors on masonry walls. The use of wood plugs in masonry walls is not permissible.

All sockets must have a weather cover. Upon completion of the socket installation, the weather cover must be installed and remain in place until removed by the Company.

Socket meter jaw spring clips are designed to provide a pressure contact circuit for socket type meters only. No other device may be inserted in these clips. Violation of this rule is sufficient cause for the installation to be rejected.

Standard meter sockets are not equipped with a hub unless noted.

Meter sockets shall be rated 100, 200 or 320 amps, single- or three-phase. For higher capacity service or unusual installation problems, the Company must be consulted.

All single-phase meter sockets for 120/208 service must have five (5) terminals, with the fifth terminal preferably mounted at the nine o'clock position and prewired to the neutral terminal. See figure in Requirement 12.56 .
